Carpet moth treatment in London
What people call carpet moths are clothes moths whose larvae have found wool on the floor: under the bed, beneath a sofa, along the skirting and the edges of a stair runner. Period houses and mansion flats with fitted wool carpet and old floorboards give them plenty of cover. A London treatment for one room usually costs £150 to £220, and £330 to £450 where several rooms or the stairs are affected.

Signs the carpet is being eaten
- Thin or bald patches along the skirting, under furniture or on the treads of the stairs.

- Creamy larvae or silk tubes when you fold back the carpet edge or lift a rug.
- Small moths rising from the floor when you move a sofa or bed.
- A wool or silk rug with patches worn through on its underside.
- Shop sprays have been tried and the bare patches still grow.

London and South East ranges from the Fantastic Services moth control cost guide (updated 30 September 2026, including VAT); published plan prices from the same firm’s London price list, inside the M25, with parking and congestion extra. Read 28 October 2026. We have no tie to that firm. A guide, not a quote. Rug cleaning, repair and refitting carpet are separate and priced by those trades.
What a good quote covers
Ask for these six points in writing before anyone starts, so you know what you are paying for.
- The fibre checked
- Wool, wool mix or synthetic, and each rug, so the product and method suit what is on the floor.
- Edges and grippers
- Whether edges are lifted or treated along the gripper rods, where larvae shelter out of the light.
- Heavy furniture
- Who moves beds, wardrobes and sofas, and whether the carpet under them is in the price.
- Stairs and landings
- Runners and stair carpet named in the quote, because they are often missed.
- Rugs
- Whether good rugs are treated in place, heated or best sent to a specialist cleaner.
- Back on the carpet
- How soon you can walk on it again, and how often to vacuum the edges afterwards.
How carpets are usually treated
- Before day one
Clear and vacuum
Move small furniture, vacuum the whole carpet and its edges slowly, then seal the vacuum contents in a bag and put it in an outside bin.
- Day one
Survey and treatment
The technician lifts edges and checks under furniture, then treats the pile, edges and skirting gaps, or heats the room.
- Same day
Keep off until dry
After a spray you stay off the carpet until it is dry, which is usually a few hours. A heated room is usable once it has cooled.
- Weeks later
Return visit
A spray course comes back for the next hatch. Keep vacuuming the edges weekly in the meantime.

Find a specialistQuestions Londoners ask
Is a carpet moth a different moth?
No. The larvae of the common webbing clothes moth and the case-bearing clothes moth eat carpet as readily as jumpers. English Heritage describes the damage as loss of pile in patches.
Why do London period homes get carpet moths so often?
Fitted wool carpet, gaps under skirting, old floorboards and furniture that rarely moves give larvae dark, undisturbed wool to feed on. Central heating keeps them developing through the winter.
Can a good Persian or Turkish rug be treated?
Yes, but ask how. English Heritage suggests a commercial freezer or a controlled heat process from a reputable company for rugs and upholstery. Tell the firm about natural dyes, silk or fragile repairs before they start.
Do I have to replace the carpet?
Rarely. Treatment stops the feeding, and small patches can be repaired or hidden by a carpet fitter. If you do replace it, treat the room first so the new carpet is not attacked.
Do synthetic carpets get moths?
Larvae need keratin from animal fibres, so pure synthetic carpet is seldom eaten. Wool-rich blends are at risk, and spilt food, hair and fluff in any carpet can feed them.
