Moth fumigation in London

In a London home, "moth fumigation" nearly always means fogging: a fine insecticide mist that fills a closed room and settles on every surface, usually alongside a spray of carpet edges and furniture. True gas fumigation of the kind used on ships and warehouses is specialist work under strict rules, and is rarely used in houses. A fogging course in London typically costs £240 to £330, and up to about £450 for a whole home.

When fogging makes sense

  • Several rooms are affected and adults are flying throughout the home.
  • Fitted wardrobes, eaves cupboards or voids are hard to reach with a hand sprayer.
  • Larvae are spread through carpets, under furniture and behind skirting.
  • You can leave the home for a few hours on each visit.
  • Heat is not practical for the building or the budget.
  • You want the whole home treated at once rather than room by room.

How a fogging course usually goes

  1. Before day one

    Prepare the rooms

Bag or clean clothes, vacuum carpets and edges, cover or remove food, and make plans for pets and fish.

  2. Day one

    Spray and fog

Carpet edges and furniture are sprayed by hand, then each closed room is fogged. You leave for the time the technician sets.

  3. Coming back

    Air and wipe

Open the windows, wipe surfaces where food is prepared, and keep children and pets out until rooms are aired.

  4. Weeks later

    Repeat visits

The course repeats to catch larvae from eggs that survived, usually two or three weeks apart.

Questions Londoners ask

Is moth fumigation the same as fogging?

In homes, usually. Firms use "fumigation" loosely for fogging or misting with an insecticide. Fumigation in the strict sense uses toxic gases, which the Health and Safety Executive regulates closely and which is rarely used in a house.

Do moth bombs from the shop work?

They kill adults that are flying, but the mist seldom reaches larvae deep in carpet pile, folded clothes or under furniture, and those larvae do the damage. Follow the label exactly if you use one, and never in a room with a pilot light or a fish tank.

How long must I stay out after fogging?

Usually a few hours, but it depends on the product. The technician should tell you, in writing if you ask, and explain what to air and wipe when you return.

Is fumigation better than heat treatment?

Neither is better for every home. Fogging reaches every room at a lower price but needs repeat visits; heat is one visit with no insecticide on heated items but costs more. A good specialist will explain which suits your rooms.

Can fogging be done in a flat in a block?

Normally, yes. Tell the managing agent if the hallway is shared, check whether the smoke alarms are linked to the building, and ask the firm how they keep the mist inside your flat.
